Story: La Lagune’s history began in the 16th century when Dutch polder technicians began to plant vines on land that had been reclaimed from the sea. It remained in the hands of powerful Bordeaux family De Seze for many generations and gained Third Growth status in the 1855 classification. They encountered a couple of tough years in the 1950’s, suffering from economic crisis and the great frost of 1956, but Georges Brunette purchased the property in 1958, undertook an extensive renovation program and put La Lagune back to the path of excellence. Story: Chateau Leoville Barton is the third (and smallest) piece of the famous trio of Saint Julien properties that 200 years ago formed one estate, Chateau Leoville. It has been the property of the illustrious Barton family since 1836. Leoville Barton has no actual house or winery, so the wine is made and bottled at the Barton's neighboring property, Chateau Langoa-Barton. That comes as something of a surprise to many people, but the term 'Chateau' actually refers to the vineyard property and does not require the buildings that are often associated with the term.

Anthony Barton took over ownership and management of the properties from his Uncle, Ronald Barton, in 1983. Under Anthony's oversight, both properties dramatically improved in quality from the position of average performers for their classification, to being consistently, very highly rated.

The eye-catching limited edition is the result of a feverish two days’ experimentation with a few bottles of DP and a cornucopia of Hollywood lighting and pyrotechnic equipment. The Californian director then took all of the images he had shot and went about designing a special edition bottle and gift box inspired by the way the light hits the curved glass. Story: Undoubtedly, this gem from Islay is one of the most highly anticpated whisky releases in 2012, celebrating Ardbeg's (and any distillery for that matter) first ever experiment in space. NanoRacks, a US-based space research company, approached Ardbeg to test the effects of zero-gravity on flavour development when it comes to maturation. Vials containing a class of compounds called "terpenes" (chemicals that are very aromatic and flavour active) were taken from the Scottish distillery and sent to the International Space Station where they will remain for the next two years. It's the interaction of these terpenes and other molecules with the oak wood that will form the basis of this "spage-age" maturation experiment. While this bottle does not contain any "space whisky", the Galileo is a special vatting of different styles of Ardbeg laid-down in 1999 that together give a sweet and smoky texture. The defining feature of the Galileo 12 yo single malt whisky is that it is spirit matured in ex-Marsala wine casks from Sicily that is then mixed with Ardbeg matured in first and second fill ex-bourbon casks. With a limited release, the demand for Ardbeg Galileo, named after the father of modern astronomy, will be brisk!

Tasting Notes: On the nose, there is the soft smell of sweet peat and barbecued pineapple (smoky fruit). Add some water and you can smell toasted vanilla, and hazelnut with a touch of cinnamon. On the palate, there's the peat followed by lemon and lime juice, bananas, and currants with the subtle flavour of toasted marshmallows and creamy cappucino. The finish is long and smoky with some peppery heat.

Story: The story goes that a bodyguard of Fidel Castro shared some of his private supply of cigars with the Cuban leader. These cigars, which were made by a local artisan named Eduardo Ribera, impressed Castro so much that he requested a special batch be made exclusively for himself. The Cohiba brand was formally launched in 1968, and in the initial years only a few thousand boxes were produced annually, these being reserved for Castro, his high-level officers and for diplomatic gifts. This exclusivity meant that Cohiba cigars quickly gained a cult following when they were launched worldwide in 1982. Today, Cohiba cigars are generally regarded as 'King of the Cubans'.

When Cyril finished his studies he took experience in various regions across France and he now brings unfamiliar vinification methods back to his home in Beaujolais. With long maceration and without using the classic pneumatic press from Beaujolais, Cyril aims to respect the “fruit de notre travail”, the ‘fruits of his labour’, and makes Beaujolais with character. He has been awarded several diplomas from different French gastronomic congregations. Story: Aged 23, he is the fourth generation of winegrower in the family although Romain decided to start his own adventure in 2010, after studying for 6 years. From the 7ha of vineyard he has taken, he is producing a range of cuvees that reflects the terroir of Brouilly in respect of nature. Romain likes to slowly vinify around 21C in regards to gently extract the aromas and tannins from the grapes. To our view this is a Burgundy style at a Beaujolais price. They have over 125 years of winemaking tradition and are proud to celebrate the ‘richness of diversity’ that Argentina offers. Trapiches vineyards are based in 9 main areas of Mendoza, at a range of 600m to 1250m above sea level. Story: Rauzan-Ségla’s history follows a familiar story: a chateau that performed so admirably during the 19th century falters in the mid-20th century with a series of disappointing vintages that dwindles their once soaring reputation. Story: Ste. Michelle Vintners planted its first vines at Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. Cold Creek remains one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards in the state. They now own more than 3,500 prime vineyard acres in the Columbia Valley.

In 1976, Ste. Michelle Vintners built a French style Chateau in Woodinville, and changed its name to Chateau Ste. Michelle. Story: Since as long ago as the 18th century, the Conterno family have been producing wine in the Piemonte region. It is still in the family hands with the three brothers Stefano, Franco and Giacomo running both the winemaking side and the business side of the house. They are so focused on quality that they took the decisive step to reduce production from 180,000 bottles in 1998 to just 80,000 bottles in 2011. They own a large plot of 27-year-old vines in the commune of Barolo as well as one of the best vineyards on the Bussia Soprana hill.

Story: This five-times distilled vodka has been filtered through Siberian rock. The story goes that in 2001, 12 gentlemen, including bussinessman Frederik Paulsen, were traped by the glaciers in the South Pole after an emergency landing. While waiting to be rescued, they warmed themselves with vodka and planned an expedition to find the great Mammoth.

However, they were beaten to the mammoth in 2003 when an entire mammoth was discovered under the frozen Siberian tundra. Nonetheless, the men made their expedition and Paulsen honoured the discovery with by creating the Mamont Vodka. The bottle is designed to look like the tusk that was poking out of the ice.

It is produced in one of Russia’s oldest distilleries at the foot of the Altai Mountains. Uniquely, cedar nuts are added to the vodka, the same type that the ancient Mammoths once grazed on.

Story: A history of farming the Valley has been in the Corkrum family for over 130 years. Shari Corkrum Derby’s grandfather bought land in the mid 1800’s and successfully farmed there until the great depression of 1893. After losing everything, he started again with the land that is now planted with rows of vine. The vines we see today were originally planted in 1993 and gave their first bottled wine in 1999. Today winemaker Serge Laville continues to push for consistent high quality for every wine that he makes.

Story: Chateau Musar is a fascinating estate and has been the torchbearer for Lebanese wine for decades. Since Gaston Horchar established the estate in 1930, wine has been produced in all but two vintages, even though the vineyard employees would often work under high-risk conditions due to the war in Lebanon. Their red wine, which has its own a unique style, first found international recognition when it was selected as "Discovery of the Fair" at the 1979 Bristol Wine Fair.

Story: Warwick Estate is a family-owned and run winery. Managing Director Michael Ratcliffe is the 3rd generation family member to oversee this high quality boutique operation that has been lauded globally for excellence and consistency. From 1771 till 1902, Warwick Wine Farm was known as the farm ‘De Goede Sukses’. After the Anglo Boer war in 1902, Colonel William Alexander Gordon, Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire regiment decided against returning to England and bought the farm. He renamed it ‘Warwick’ as a tribute to his regiment and the rest, as they say, is history. Warwick was purchased on April 1st 1964 by Stan Ratcliffe after an extensive search for the best ‘terroir’ in the Cape.

Story: The Camut family has been producing calvados in the prestigious Pays d’Auge region since the 1800s, and they have maintained several family traditions over the years. Story: From small beginnings, Cognac Ragnaud-Sabourin has become one of the most prestigious estates in Grande Champagne. It was established in 1941 be Marcel Ragnaud, and is today run by three of his descendents – the grandmother-mother-daughter team of Denise, Annie and Patricia Ragnaud-Sabourin. They never blend their cognacs across different years, and only very limited quantities of each is produced.

This remarkable cognac is a blend of 90% brandies produced in the early 1900’s and 10% brandies produced prior to 1870, before phylloxera ravaged the region. As such, it contains four grape varieties that were never replanted after the phylloxera years – namely Blanc Ramé, Bouilleaux, Balzac blanc and Chalosse.

Story: Wine has been grown in this part of Portugal for many centuries and although the Port trade can’t say that they have been going quite as long, it does boast a fine history dating back to the late 1600’s. Taylor’s was one of the pioneers of the Douro. Founded in 1692 by an English wine merchant named Job Bearsley, the company was one of the first producers in the region. Story: Chateau Mouton Rothschild was not always a First Growth. It was extraordinarily omitted from the original selection of First Growths in 1855, despite the fact the wines were attracting prices equal to the likes of Lafite and Margaux. However, the wines have always been first-class, and intense lobbying finally installed Chateau Mouton Rothschild amongst Bordeaux’s elite in 1973. The traditions of the Chateau play a strong part in today’s production, with Mouton Rothschild being one of only a handful of estates to ferment in traditional oak vats.

Story: This is a Chateau that needs little introduction, as this Bordeaux First Growth has been producing outstanding wines for centuries. There is evidence that wine has been made on the site since the 14^th Century, and has been the wine of choice for Kings and Presidents over its long history. The prominent Rothschild family have owned the estate since 1866, and although they have suffered periods of inconsistency in that time, they are currently flying high under the guidance of Charles Chevallier, who has delivered a series of outstanding wines since taking over winemaking duties in 1994. The wines are Cabernet dominant, and known for their signature elegance and perfumed aromas. The volume of the Grand Vin varies from year to year, but rarely exceeds 20,000 cases.

Story: Haut Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most famous Châteaux and has a fascinating history. It is the only original First Growth outside the Médoc and is set in a region which boasts a winemaking history stretching back to ancient times. Haut Brion’s own history can be traced back to the 14^th Century and, like many of the top Chateaux, has experienced both high times and low times under the control of many different families. At a point when Haut Brion was bankrupt and on the verge of closure, American financier Clarence Dillon bought the estate in 1935. Story: Royal Tokaji was the first foreign company to invest in the Tokaji region in Hungary, being founded in 1990. They purchased some of the best 1^st and 2^nd growth vineyards concentrating on single vineyard production of these Aszu style wines.

The region has a rich history and has been the sweet wine of choice for Royals, Popes and Presidents for hundreds of years. The region can also lay claim to being the first classified wine region in Europe, which happened in 1700.

These botrytis style sweet wines have a low alcohol mixed with incredible acidity and sugar. The Puttonyos level refers to the sweetness of the wine with 7 being the highest sweetness level.

Story: Glen Garioch distillery was founded in 1797 by the Manson brothers (John and Alexander). The Distillery has had a long and interesting past but is perhaps best known for its Greenhouse project, which started in 1977. Glen Garioch soon became famous not just for its fine quality single malts but for the vegetables and flowers grown on site by recycling there heating supply which also saved them thousands in there fuel costs. The Project got them to the World Fair in Tennessee in 1982.

Story: Wine has been grown in this part of Portugal for many centuries and although the Port trade can’t say that they have been going quite as long, it does boast a fine history dating back to the late 1600’s. Taylor’s was one of the pioneers of the Douro. Founded in 1692 by an English wine merchant named Job Bearsley the company was one of the first producers in the region. Taylor’s remain a family owned company to this day.

Story: James Delamain returned from Ireland in 1759 to form a partnership with his father-in-law Jean Issac Ranson, Ranson was the owner of a long-standing exporting firm that dates back to the very beginnings of Cognac. Delamain selects and purchases its eaux-de-vie from owners and distillers in the exclusive terroirs of Grande Champagne in Cognac.

The pale and dry XO gets it name because of the naturally paler colours of the Cognacs used in this blend and because it only has its own natural fruit sweetness. It is a blend of Cognacs of 25 years.

Story: Chateau La Fleur d’Or is a project started by Bill Blatch of Bordeaux negociant Vintex. Blatch combines small batches of wines that he finds from lesser known producers and bits from some crus classes that don’t quite make the Grand vin. Story: Owned by Baron Patrick de Ladoucette this magnificent Estate in Pouilly-Fume is one of the most prestigious in the whole of the Loire Valley. The Ladoucette and Comte Lafond families have owned the largest and best vineyards in the region since 1787 when they bought the Estate from the illegitimate daughter of the King Louis the XV.

After taking over Ladoucette in 1972, the Baron extended his activities to Sancerre, Chablis, Vouvray and Chinon. The Baron de L, Pouilly-Fume is renowned as one of the great examples of its kind from a world leading wine region.

Story: Jean-François de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc, combined several vineyard plots in Pauillac in the early 18th century. Years later, his descendants added neighbouring vines in a place named Canet. This was the beginning of one of the largest estates in the Médoc, which quite naturally added the name of its founder to that of the land registry reference.

A century later, Pontet-Canet was included in the famous 1855 classification, thereby confirming its membership among the elite of the Médoc. This privileged position did not go unnoticed by one of the most important Bordeaux shippers of the time, Herman Cruse, who bought the estate in 1865. He built new cellars, modernised the winemaking facilities, and established the wine's reputation around the world.

Over two centuries Pontet-Canet has been owned by three different families. Today it is run by Alfred Tesseron with his niece Melanie, who have once again put in considerable investment to the winery and vineyard.

Story: Mas La Mola is based on seven hectares of prime vineyard land in the heart of the Priorat region. The old vines (35-70 years old) of these vineyards yield only a tiny amount of fruit, meaning Mas La Mola can only produce very limited quantities of their three wines every year. However, this hand-harvested fruit is of unrivalled quality, and the careful winemaking and blending practices of local boys Jordi Masdeu and Alessandro Marchesu ensures that the wine produced each year lives up to the reputation of the estate.

Story: Chateau Batailley derives its name from a great battle (“bataille“) that raged on the site in 1452, during the 100-Years War. It was during this battle that the French re-conquered the neighbouring Chateau Latour from the English. A few years later the first vines were planted on these historical and blood soaked grounds.

Today, this Fifth Growth boast some very old vines, producing some of the best value Bordeaux wines to be found. The wines have a seductive character, and a hallmark silky, elegant texture. Recent vintages have been amongst the finest of the last 50 years.

Story: The U’Luvka may seem like a new arrival, but it actually recalls a recipe created by a famous alchemist for King Sigismund III of Poland in the late 16^th Century. His court was known to enjoy a tipple, and legend has it that they were almost permanently hungover. Believe it or not, the creation of this vodka was originally thought of as a scientific experiment, with the aim to make the spirit pure and hangover free. While we’ll steer clear of claiming the latter, we can tell you that this is an impressive vodka, and it’s no surprise it has already picked up over 25 international awards.

Story: Antinori are an estate with a history to be proud of. They have been perfecting their wines over six centuries of production in the Tuscany region, and have a reputation for producing and developing iconic blends. The Antinori name is synonymous with quality and style throughout their producing regions of Tuscany, Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia.

The Antonori family took over the Castello estate in 1940, as a focus on producing premium white wines. They achieved this in 1987 with the introduction of what was to become Antinori’s defining white wine – Cervaro della Sala. As with their reds, no expense is spared in the production of this iconic white wine, with new French oak barriques used for fermentation.

It is rich and full bodied on the palate with butter, hazelnut and mineral showing through the ripe and lengthy fruit.

Story: Billecart-Salmon might not be as large as some of its fellow Grand Marques, but it does carry a huge reputation for producing exquisite Champagnes. The house was established in 1818, when Nicolas-Francois Billecart married Elisabeth Salmon, and has steadily risen to its current positions amongst Champagne's elite. The Cuvee Nicolas-Francois Billecart was first created in 1964 as a tribute to he House's founder. Only grapes from Grand Cru vineyards are used in the blends, and the wine is partially vinified in traditional oak casks, delivering a rich and elegant wine.

Story: A funky new London Dry that has gin-lovers buzzing. The Ish is distilled five times and macerated with no fewer than 12 botanicals, including liquorice,orange peel, nutmeg and cinnamon. The ratio of concentrate to alcohol and water is relatively high, giving Ish a beautiful full-bodied mouthfeel and oily texture. We were impressed at how sippable this gin was, and think that it would be just as enjoyable over ice as it would be in any classic gin cocktail.

They recognized the potential of the Spring Mountain district to produce world-class Bordeaux varietal wines and assumed the challenge to plant the rugged slope and build a winery into the hillside on their property. Newton Vineyard’s philosophy is to work in harmony with nature to fully express the terroir and the vintage. Great wines can only be made from great vineyards. The vineyard blocks are planted to the varieties most suited to their location and soils, and are farmed sustainably, with the parcels scattered among the forested land to maintain a balance with the natural habitat.

Story: Jean-Marc Brocard's origins lie in the Côte d'Or. He is a farmer's son, not even the son of the vigneron. It was the result of marriage that brought him to wine; he married Claudine (his childhood sweetheart), a vigneron's daughter. Starting with a hectare of vines from his father-in-law, Emile Petit, he has created an estate of some 180 hectares vineyards in Chablis and Burgundy.

Tasting Notes: Brilliant colour with green highlights. The nose is precise, pure, chiseled, with slightly iodized notes of citrus fruit. Story: Chateau Climens is truly incomparable. Ironically, for some, ‘Climens’ means infertile or poor land in Celtic. Fortunately, for those in the know, the prodigious wine is capable of transforming apparently undesirable soils into the most outstanding wine terroirs. Situated on the highest point of the Barsac appellation, the vines stretch over 30 hectares around the Chateau, in one continuous vineyard. The red soil, dotted with pebbles is made up of a thin layer of clayey, ferruginous sand on a substratum of fissured starfish limestone. The combination of these soils and the slope provide excellent natural drainage.

Grape: Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon

Area: Barsac, France

Alcohol: 13%

Tasting Notes: Straw gold in colour and a seductive nose of rich honeyed fruit with hints of apricots and barley sugar. Still amazingly fresh on the palate with ripe fruit characters and good acidity. A complex wine with excellent length and weight.
